First Annual Ferrari Day at the Petersen Automotive Museum

Los Angeles CA, Feb 17 2013 - Terry Karges, Executive Director at the Petersen Museum has a long term mission.

“What we really want to do here at our museum is have a celebration of everyone’s special interest. How could we find ways to interest special interest groups of automotive enthusiasts and motorcycle enthusiasts? We celebrated Shelby recently. What would you do for a Ferrari? So today we’re here celebrating Enzo Ferrari’s birthday. Why today? Well, we haven’t had a Ferrari event at the Museum in quite some time and we thought, why don’t we investigate when was Enzo born and we’ll celebrate around his birthday.

The Ferrari Club meets here every month; the first Saturday of every month at the Petersen. We approached them and said what do you think of this and they said that would be a marvelous idea. Why don’t we get together and we’ll announce that to our club members. Then they decided to open it up to the National Ferrari Club and Ferrari Clubs all over the United States, so what we have here is a smattering of cars and enthusiasts from literally all over the country.

So here we are! It’s our first event - our first annual Ferrari Day. We got lucky with weather of course - it’s a sunny day. I think one of the highlights here is that a lot of the people that are here are members of the Checkered Flag Museum membership which is an important part. Probably 500 of the best collectors in the country have been members for quite some time. I’m guessing that at least half the people here are members already and the rest we are going to try to interest them in becoming members.

We were talking to some Volkswagen people this week, and they said that they never had an event at the Petersen and so we’re doing something with them in October. Surprise: it will be during the Octoberfest! If you have a club, call us or go to Petersen.org to see our event schedule. Something to remember in terms of events and opportunities here at the Petersen – we have catering, banquets for 10-500 people, galas, black ties. It’s an important part of our business.

Interesting things are happening and will soon be announced: where Petersen is going; and what it is going to become. We have a lot going on with the most important cars in the world.”
